"T.M. Trucking. Tommy."

The name and phone number were scribbled in blue on the cheap motel notepad. I strained to make them out in the darkness, aided only by the dim flashing of neon through the drawn blinds.

Tommy Marino was a name I hadn't heard since my early days on the force. He was a small time mobster then, ran a freight depot on the east river. We never could place him close to anything worth looking into, so our focus went elsewhere.

Word on the street was he had a name for himself now: Tommy The Needle. Yesterday a street punk on the corner near Tommy's depot said he had seen a lot of late night traffic recently, groups of black SUV's and the like. For that helpful information I let the punk keep his teeth, but his nose would need some mending.

So Tommy was tied to the Valkyr case, of that I was sure. It was time to pay him a visit. Grabbing the notepad and my beretta off the scarrred surface of the bedside table, I headed out into the storm.
